A Cult-Classic '70s Sci-Fi Officially Returns With New Sequel Trailer 45+ Years Later

Collider covers the return of the Killer Tomatoes franchise with a new sequel trailer, more than 45 years after the original.

Collider dug into what “organic intelligence” actually means in the film — which the trailer defines, helpfully, as being like artificial intelligence, but freakier.

The write-up covers the returning faces in detail. John Astin is back as Professor Gangreen in what Collider notes is his first on-camera role in twenty years, and franchise co-creator J. Stephen Peace reprises Wilbur Finletter — the paratrooper whose chute never closes. New to the vine: Dan Bakkedahl, Tom Arnold, Catherine Corcoran, Vernee Watson, David Koechner, Eric Roberts and Myrna Velasco.

Behind the camera, David Ferino directs from a script by franchise co-creators J. Stephen Peace and Costa Dillon. Anchor Bay Entertainment releases on August 7, 2026.

Collider also walks the franchise history for newcomers: a 1978 original made for under $100,000, the 1988 sequel that put a young George Clooney on screen, two more sequels in the nineties, and two seasons of a Saturday-morning cartoon on Fox.

It has garnered quite the cult following, and these facts about Attack of the Killer Tomatoes might explain why.
